Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental and Test Ranges at Whiskey Golf, located near Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island, completed a series of successful torpedo trials. The range, designated as Area WG, conducted approximately 350 test firings over a three-day period, marking one of the busiest testing cycles this year. The trials involved collaboration between the Canadian Forces and the U.S. Navy, with six U.S. naval warships, including two submarines, participating alongside Canadian vessels. Since the range’s establishment in 1965, over 31,000 torpedo tests have been conducted, with 400 U.S. naval visits recorded since 1999. The tests utilized a 20-square-kilometer area of the Strait of Georgia, isolated from open ocean, with depths ideal for testing and a flat seabed facilitating torpedo retrieval. The Canadian Coast Guard monitored the area, broadcasting active status updates on VHF 21B, ensuring no civilian vessels entered during the trials. The operation involved 120 personnel, supported by three helicopters and 10 support boats, achieving a 95% success rate in live-fire exercises. Post-trial analysis confirmed the effectiveness of new torpedo guidance systems, with data to be reviewed over the next month. The range remains a critical asset for maritime defense testing, with plans for additional trials scheduled for September 2025.
