Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) reported significant progress in its ongoing anti-corruption investigations, with a focus on high-profile cases involving public officials. The agency announced the completion of a probe into a scheme involving the misappropriation of $250 million in state funds allocated for military procurement. This investigation led to the arrest of 12 individuals, including two former deputy defense ministers and five mid-level officials, following a year-long operation that uncovered falsified contracts for non-delivered military equipment. The recovered funds, estimated at $180 million, have been returned to the state budget, with the remaining amount under legal review for potential recovery. Separately, on August 9, 2025, the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) initiated proceedings against a network of 18 officials and business executives accused of embezzling $15 million from infrastructure projects in the Kyiv region. This case involved kickbacks and inflated costs for road construction, with evidence gathered from 300 documents and 45 witness testimonies. Additionally, the High Anti-Corruption Court scheduled hearings for August 15, 2025, to address 10 pending cases involving over $50 million in alleged corruption, including bribery and misuse of international aid. These efforts align with Ukraine’s commitments to the European Union, which has provided $3.5 billion in financial support this year, conditional on anti-corruption reforms. The NABU reported a total of 85 investigations completed in 2025, resulting in 30 convictions and the recovery of $300 million in misappropriated funds.
