On August 21, 2025, the regional government of Andalusia announced that it received 16 bids for the construction of the third and final section of the Malaga Metro extension. This section, part of an ongoing project to expand the metro network, includes a 1.8-kilometer underground branch from Guadalmedina Station to Hospital Civil, featuring three new stations: Hilera, La Trinidad, and Hospital. The expansion, which began construction in May 2024, is expected to be completed by 2027, adding to the existing 13.2 kilometers of track and 19 stations across two lines that have been operational since 2014. The new section aims to improve access to the Hospital Civil area, serving an estimated 6.7 million annual passengers in 2022, with projections of increased ridership. The project, managed under a public-private partnership, has a total investment exceeding $800 million to date, with the latest phase focusing on enhancing connectivity in the city center. The 16 bids were submitted by various construction firms, with the regional government set to review them over the next two months to select a contractor. This follows the recent opening of a 1.2-kilometer extension to Atarazanas in March 2023, reflecting continued efforts to expand the metro system. The Malaga Metro currently operates 18 Urbos 3 light rail vehicles, each with a capacity of 226 passengers, and maintains a schedule from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. on weekends.
