Dutch authorities extradited professional soccer player Quincy Promes from Dubai to the Netherlands to face a combined seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence. The extradition, confirmed by the Dutch public prosecution service, follows his arrest at his Dubai residence last week, prompted by a request from Dutch police. Promes, a former Ajax and Netherlands international aged 33, was convicted for his role in smuggling 1,362 kilograms of cocaine through the port of Antwerp in 2020, as well as for stabbing his cousin during a family dispute in 2020. The cocaine smuggling case involved a criminal network, with evidence presented during a trial that concluded in February 2024, leading to his initial six-year sentence. The additional 18-month sentence for the stabbing was added later, bringing the total to seven-and-a-half years. Promes was transported back to the Netherlands on a chartered plane and is now in Dutch custody, awaiting further legal proceedings. The case has drawn attention due to his high-profile status, with the prosecution noting the complexity of the international operation. This development marks a significant enforcement action against organized crime involving prominent figures.
