Red Bull Racing announced the immediate dismissal of Christian Horner as team principal and CEO, ending his 20-year tenure with the Formula 1 team. Horner, who joined when Red Bull entered F1 as a constructor in 2005, led the team to eight drivers’ championships and six constructors’ titles, achieving 124 race wins and 287 podium finishes. The decision, confirmed through an official statement, came amid the team’s challenging 2025 season, with Red Bull currently ranked fourth in the constructors’ championship after 12 races. Max Verstappen, the team’s top driver, has secured two wins this year but trails the championship leader, Oscar Piastri of McLaren, by 69 points, placing him third overall. The team’s second driver, Yuki Tsunoda, has scored seven points, reflecting struggles with the RB21 car. Following Horner’s exit, Laurent Mekies, previously the team principal of Red Bull’s sister team Racing Bulls, was appointed as the new CEO and team principal effective immediately. Alan Permane, formerly Racing Bulls’ sporting director, stepped into the team principal role at Racing Bulls. The leadership change coincides with a mid-season break, with the next race scheduled for the Belgian Grand Prix on July 27, 2025. The team’s social media acknowledged Horner’s contributions, while Verstappen expressed gratitude for their shared successes, including four world championships.
