On May 15, 2025, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) published a report on Greenland’s Nuuk Prison, specifically examining Unit A, the only closed unit in the territory. The report followed a visit from January 14 to 16, 2025, to assess detention conditions, regime, and treatment of inmates. Nuuk Prison, operational since 2019, allows Greenlandic prisoners to serve sentences closer to home, a change from previous practices where they were sent to Denmark. The facility, the only one of its kind in Greenland, houses inmates in a familiar cultural and linguistic environment. During the visit, the CPT delegation noted that there were no allegations of physical ill-treatment by staff, indicating adherence to humane treatment standards. The report aims to provide recommendations for further improvements in the prison system.
